for MLOC Productions Oct 2017 production
Shout - The Musical

Shout: The Legend of the Wild One
Performances Oct 13th - 21st Oct 2017

Shout! The Story of The Wild One is a musical production based on the life and times of Johnny O’Keefe the undisputed King of Australian Rock and Roll,

The time is 1957 and there is little or no rock scene in Australia. A local band, the Dee Jays with vocalist Johnny O’Keefe supports Bill Haley when he tours the country. This leads to a contract with Festival Records. He quickly becomes a major figure in establishing rock and roll and pop music in Australia with a series of hit records and performances on Lee Gordon’s “Big Shows” supporting some of the greatest names of the rock era (Buddy Holly, Little Richard, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Chuck Berry, The Platters to name a few) which he blasts off the stages of Stadiums with his frantic stage act. An act that earned him the title “The Wild One”.

We follow the highs of those early days of touring, hosting his own national radio programme as well as the first television programme “Six o clock rock” from 1959 – 1962. He tours America with limited success becoming overworked but he’s soon back on television with another show Sing! Sing! Sing! and recording another string of hit records.

He achieves some of his greatest successes during these times but gradually it takes its toll as he struggles to conform to marriage and family life and health problems leading to his untimely death in 1978 at the age of 43, only one year prior to Elvis.

This show is a celebration of the music of Johnny O’Keefe, his life and his legacy to the Australian music industry.

MLOC are looking for a cast of approx. 20 – 25 people of varying ages and looks.

Director: Rhylee Nowell
Musical Director:  Tim Ryan
Choreographer: Sabrina Klock

Being part of the cast of ‘Shout!’

Show fees are payable by all members of the cast. Show fees are primarily used to insure you against injury during your participation in the show, so it is very important for your own wellbeing that they are paid. The deadline for payment of fees is the second week of rehearsals. All cast members must become a member of MLOC Productions Inc.

The show fees for Shout! are as follows:

  • MLOC Membership Fee - $40 (adult), $30 (concession / student)
  • Show Fee - $60 (Adult), $55 (Concession / Student)
  • There is also a $60.00 rehearsal material hire fee, $40.00 of which will be refunded when the material is cleaned and returned at the end of the show
  • Total fees payable at the first rehearsal $160 (Adults), $145 (Concession / Student)

Cast members need to attend all rehearsals unless they are told specifically they are not required. Included in this pack is a rehearsal schedule. You need to let us know when you audition if you are already involved in an activity that will preclude you from attending any of the scheduled rehearsals. This will allow the production team to plan around your absence. Being absent from too many rehearsals is not only unfair to your fellow cast members, but also may mean your exclusion from the show. In the event that you will be absent from a rehearsal due to sickness, or some other unforeseen event, you can let the production team know via phone call or SMS.

There will be attendance sheets at each rehearsal and each show at the theatre which you will need to sign as you arrive. This is primarily for Occupational Health and Safety reasons. Should we need to evacuate the venue for any reason, we need to know who is present.

All cast members will receive a t-shirt as a part of the show fee, publicising the show. Hoodies and additional t-shirts will also be available for purchase. There will be flyers available which you can use to help publicise the show to your family and friends. Most non-professional companies such as MLOC rely heavily on the cast to sell tickets, so it’s in your interests to publicise the show as much as possible.

There are a range of social events which are being planned for the coming months, which we encourage you to partake in to allow you to get to know your fellow cast members.

Should you have skills in other areas, including set construction and painting, costuming, marketing, etc., we would love to hear from you. We are always looking for help with these aspects of producing our show.

There are certain members of the production team which you will get to know over the coming months.

Our production manager (Chris Ryan - 0412 013 882)is your first port of call if you need to talk about matters of a more administrative nature or relate to any general production.

I hope you enjoy your involvement with ‘Shout!’ and with our company.
